Season of Dust - Savute Safari Journal
© Elephants fight it out in the dust
Savute's dry months are dust-laden, and whilst some times unpleasant, is also the back-drop for dramatic wildlife interactions in the struggle for survival...The dust infiltrates, everywhere, the nostrils, the back of the throat and in the eyes - and the wind that harvests the dust becomes a seemingly ever-present irritant. It is a time that tests the resolve, and many choose to turn away from.
You curse the time, and you curse the irritations of the wind and the heat that add to the discomfort brought by the dust. You know it is one of the seasons, and understand its necessity, but its presence leaves you irritated and bad tempered - and your being is not at ease. Your yearning for another time adds to the unease.
But with the dust come dramatic moments, awe-inspiring sunrises and multi-pastelled sunsets - and the huge gatherings of wildlife, and you forgive her times of irritation and embrace the beauty that she is.
And the time is beautiful
