Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana offers fabulous summer wildlife viewing, showcasing the Kalahari Black-Maned Lion and Cheetah in action. Deception Valley is nearby and a prime wildlife area. The valley was once an ancient riverbed and derives its name from the misleading appearance of water in the middle which is in fact a mirage.

Kalahari Plains Camp is located in the northern section of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana. This reserve is one of the largest in the world, covering 5 million hectares. Diverse habitats and nutritious grasses attract many kinds of animals, some in great numbers which in turn draws various predators. Healthy game populations move seasonally from the dunes to the valley near Kalahari Plains Camp.

Winter sees game in the dune vegetation and around waterholes, while the summer months bring glorious rain and fertility to the land to support large populations of game. Avifauna in the reserve numbers over 220 species to date. Bird watchers will find plenty to see including Burchell’s Sandgrouse, Kalahari Scrub-Robin, Grey-backed Sparrowlark and the African Wren-Warbler.
