Safari Activities in Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve is considered to be one of the best game viewing destinations in Africa. Our Moremi safari packages include many activities to help you make the most of your Botswana experience.

One of the first things that you need to understand is that the Moremi Game Reserve lies in the heart of the Okavango Delta. This means that many of the activities available in the Okavango Delta are available here. However, being a game reserve, there are more rules that you have to obey. For instance you are not allowed to go on night game drives and bush walks are not allowed.

Therefore the camps mainly focus on game drives, which allow you to see the many animals in the reserve such as Lion, Leopard, Wild Dog, Elephant, Buffalo and much more. These restrictions only apply to lodges within the reserve, but lodges situated around the edge of the reserve do offer bush walks and night game drives.

Game Drives

The best way to experience Moremi is on game drives. You will do these either by yourself or as part of a tour in a safari vehicle. If you are self driving, you will need a 4x4 vehicle and should read our tips regarding self driving. Game drives that are part of a tour are led by experienced and knowledgeable guides who have years of experience. They will help you track down the wildlife and tell you about their habits.

Game drives are a great way to cover large areas of the park. If you are driving in the area known as the Mopane Tongue, it is one of the best ways to cover the ground and see large herds of Elephant, Lion and antelope such as Tsessebe and Buffalo.

Mokoro Excursion

Some of the camps in the Moremi Game Reserve offer you trips in traditional style boats called Mekoros. These sturdy boats used to be hand crafted out of large Delta trees, but today most of the boats used in the Reserve are fiber glass replicas, to prevent the cutting down and depletion of the magnificent trees.

Makoros are a great way to go game viewing as they allow you to explore the back waters and banks of Papyrus. They move silently through the water and you will have a better chance of seeing wildlife coming down to drink. You will slip by Hippos, see Crocodile and Lechwe as well as other animals such as Buffalo and Elephant.

Game Viewing by Motor Boat

By setting off in a motor boat, you can see more of the rivers and lagoons that form the Okavango Delta, and more of the wildlife and magnificent scenery that make this safari destination. Motor boats are also used to get to specific destinations such as if you wanted to visit the Gcodikwe heronry near Xakanaka.
