Overview
Classic Fly-in Okavango Delta Wilderness Experience
This Okavango Floodplains Safari Experience is a combination of 2 of the most dramatic areas of the Okavango. In both regions wildlife is plentiful and predators abound, to such an extent that these are 2 of the most popular areas for wildlife documentaries. Located on opposite sides of the Delta these areas provide a complete picture of this fascinating wilderness.
Game drives, night drives and walks accompanied by passionate and experienced guides reveal a part of Africa that is thought by many not to exist anymore. Here waterways meet the desert and life blooms in profusion.
The Okavango is truly one of Africa's greatest wilderness areas and this Okavango Floodplains Package offers a complete picture of the Delta. You will come to appreciate its special beauty and rare flora and fauna.
The second area you will go to is much wetter and is known for the large herds of Buffalo that gather on its seasonal floodplains. There are several prides of Lion that call the region home, as well as Wild Dog and Cheetah.
This is a good area to see plains game such as Wildebeest, Sable and Impala. There are also many resident Waterbuck near the camp. Bird watchers will be able to experience excellent birding - with many species typical of the Delta present, such as Spoon Bills and Kingfishers, as well as rarer species such as Rosey-Throated Honeyclaws and Wattle Cranes.
Day 1: Johannesburg - Maun - Okavango
Upon arrival in Maun from Johannesburg you will board a light aircraft and fly over the Okavango to your bush camp where you will spend the next 2 nights. The game viewing starts as soon as you get off the aeroplane and the transfer to camp turns into a game drive. There will be plenty of time for lunch and settling in before the afternoon activity to explore the area.
Day 2: Okavango
The day starts early with a wake-up call and a light breakfast before heading out on a game drive looking for the predators that make the area famous. You may be lucky to see Lions on a hunt, or resting up after a night activity. The guides know the animals intimately and will share their experiences with you before the return to camp for brunch and time to relax in the heat of the day.
The afternoon activity may stretch into the evening depending on the activities of the wildlife in the area. It is not uncommon to be late for dinner because of following hunting predators. Falling asleep to the sounds of Africa is a special experience on your Botswana holiday, especially after a day of great sightings.
Day 3: Okavango
There will be time for a morning activity to catch up with what the animals are doing before flying south across the Delta to your new bush camp where you will spend 2 nights. The afternoon activity will extend into the evening allowing for the opportunity to view the nocturnal behaviour of the creatures of the Delta.
Day 4: Okavango
An early morning wake-up call is followed by a light breakfast, after which you will head out on a game drive or mokoro canoe trip to experience the Okavango through the eyes of your safari guide. Following tracks and the sounds of the morning your guide will search for the best wildlife interactions and after a few hours filled with new sights, you will return to camp for brunch before relaxing and reflecting.
Afternoon tea will be followed by the late activity to experience more of this unique area and its wildlife. The Okavango is truly special and this Floodplains Safari offers a complete experience of this wilderness wonder. Dinner under the African skies is a memorable event, as is sitting around a log fire sharing stories and memories.
